CDU's September 2009 Trimester Offers Courses in Theology, Catholic History, and Sacred Scripture

  The Catholic Distance University, VA

The Catholic Distance University (CDU) has announced course offerings for the upcoming September online 2009 trimester. These courses are 14-weeks beginning August 31 running through November 30. CDU’s courses provide authentic Catholic teachings in a flexible online learning format. Participants log into a seminar course room at a time that best meets their schedule. Opportunity for group discussion and interaction with other adults and course instructor is designed into the format.

The September trimester offers over 22 online graduate and undergraduate courses and five online seminars for graduate, undergraduate, and noncredit. “CDU’s programs are learner-centered and designed to meet the varying needs of Catholic adults at every stage of their faith formation journey,” explained Marianne Mount, president of The Catholic Distance University. “Our distance learning format allows us to reach individuals all over the world with a variety of topics and levels to meet every need.”

Study Sacred Scripture
A popular CDU undergraduate course, Survey of the Old Testament, is being offered for the September trimester. A study of Old Testament is indispensable for a thorough understanding of the New Testament. As St. Augustine said, the New (Testament) is hidden in the Old (Testament) and the Old is explained in the New and through this course, students will come to encounter more deeply the living Word of God. It begins with a study of the basic structure and contents of the Old Testament, including its basic divisions, major characters, themes, and its principal events. Through discussion and readings, students will find a way to understand the meaning and purpose of the Old Testament providing a framework which will help bring order to the many events in the Old Testament as well as appreciate the purpose and meaning of these events and their overall design.

New Moral Theology Graduate Course Offered
Moral theology comes alive and grows in the hearts and minds of people, transforming the way they currently make sense of life, into the way Jesus - crucified and risen - makes sense of life. In CDU’s new course, Fundamental Moral Theology, students will discover and understand that the foundations (the Triune God's creating, redeeming, and sanctifying activities) and components (conscience, character, and prudence) of moral theology come together in a person's repentance and continuing conversion.

History, Catholic Educators and Catechetical Ministry are Topics for Online Seminars
Also offered during the September trimester are five online seminars that students can take for credit or noncredit. Upcoming seminars include: The Rise of American Catholicism, Modern American Catholic History, Basic Principles and Skills for Catechists, Pioneers of American Catholic Education, and Vitalizing the Catechetical Ministry in the U.S. CDU’s online seminars offer authentic Catholic teachings in a flexible three-week format. Online access to reading assignments, group discussion, and professor Q&A, let students learn where and when it best fits their schedules. Each seminar earns one credit when taken at the undergraduate or graduate level.

“CDU has something for everyone hungry to discover more about the love of God in their lives,” said Mount. “You do not need to be seeking a degree to benefit from CDU courses and programs. A visit to our web site will show you the wide variety of inspiring courses and programs from three-week seminars to full semester courses.”

CDU was established in 1983 under the leadership of the late Bishop Thomas Welsh, founding Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington. The mission of CDU is to teach all nations, handing on the teachings of the Church through the techniques and technologies of modern distance education. CDU offers accredited online M.A. and B.A. degrees in theology, the Catechetical Diploma, Advanced Catechist Certificate, and a variety of continuing education opportunities in theology and faith formation.
